Yup. I was there when it happened. They're not anime characters. They're from a game series. FF only had one anime series that didn't go anywheres waaaaay back when and FFXIV has no associated anime series. FFXIV: Dad of Light (which is rather good) is a live-action series with footage taken in-game and takes place towards the end of A Realm Reborn while Shinryu vs. Omega happened at the tail-end of the expansion Heavensward to lead into the Stormblood expansion. Shinryu's first appearance was in FFV as a bonus boss. Prior to XIV the pair had not fought or held any major association with each other with both serving mainly as easter-egg/bonus bosses.
I'm well aware, I played FFXIV daily. Doesn't change the fact that Final Fantasy XIV is Anime: The Video Game.
