They're useful for buffing other units, and once they're past level 80 and can equips exos, can be pretty good tanks. But a standard 3AR/2SMG team can do the job fine without one. For night battles: absolutely 100% necessary. A team NEEDS at least one handgun on it to be able to see nearby enemies on the map in night battles. Some of them have a skill that sets off a Flare that helps the accuracy of the rest of their squad at night, but it's not as necessary.
