he sent out a distress signal to Carol Danvers somewhere in space. the symbol on the device was Captain Marvel's symbol. Apparently in the MCU she is known secretly by Nick Fury to be really powerful and capable and in his final moments he seemed to think she was the best hope to save the human species. It should make more sense after we see Captain Marvel next spring. it's gonna fill in the backstory behind that distress call. I bet at the end of the movie she tells Nick "call me if earth ever is at it's darkest hour"
