The only way you'll be able to offset that difference is with proof. If you can't provide proof, you're just going to have to accept that you don't have a credible recollection. For that matter, proof should be easy for you to produce. You could very easily record a video of you downloading Steam, installing HL2 and not being able to play it. A vague "Valve totally sent me something that sounded like they were messing with my account even though I don't use it so they're evil" isn't going to convince anyone of anything unless you can provide actual details.
