Clips and magazines are different things, which is why it will bother me. Clips actually clip onto the rounds, while magazines house rounds inside of them. The majority of guns use magazines. The Springfield rifle used in ww2 used clips. If you've ever played a ww2 game, or watched a movie set during the war and you hear a ping sound when a rifle used by an American is emptied, that was the clip getting ejected from the gun. I don't know if they still use them, but the Marine Corps used to use stripper clips to load magazines faster.

It's a wrongly used term that keeps getting perpetuated by people that don't know any better, don't care, or think it sounds cooler. I'd be fine with the term if it was simply slang, but it's just incorrect.
