The two-party system is paraded as a means to prevent fringe parties from gaining a foothold, meanwhile it is entirely to blame for Donald "very fine people on both sides" Trump riding a populist wave to victory when people finally said "fuck it" to the establishment and wanted literally anything else.

...he says forgetting that the system radically changed. Primary elections didn't become a thing until the last century. Before that, party leadership just chose their candidate. The controls that parties actually have -- the very thing meant to guarantee quality by blocking populists -- was largely removed to give party members more choice. Nowadays, the only thing really left on either side is super-delegates for the Dems, but they tend to vote with the party so even that's not a real control.

"very fine people on both sides"

Well, clearly the thugs who went to use violence to break up a peaceful rally where the organizers even had permits aren't very fine people by any stretch, but there were some racists with hate propaganda attending the rally itself. In fact, I daresay that there were some terrible people on both sides! (But, of course, the people going there to use violence to shut down a demonstration were unequivocally more wrong.)

Coalitions are where it's at because there's more accountability, not just robbing/trashing the place because the party isn't at your house. There's got to be a third equally viable option, at least, probably a fourth. That way nobody gets cocky and makes themselves more easily punished for any misdeeds. Your partner may stab you in the back if you go off the rails. America's party system is really not significantly different than China's.

Overlooking that more choices doesn't necessarily mean better quality (especially when you look at Gary "Aleppo Moment" Johnson and Jill "the only thing you need to understand about quantitative easing is that it's a magic trick" Stein), the US's system is pretty damn fucking different from China's. There's not enough hyperbole in the world to conflate the two.
