It's why, even with the unlimited power of an omnipotent god, he still loses. Essentially, deep down, he doesn't consider himself worthy of success. He's openly admitted to this, in a conversation with Adam Warlock (shortly after faking his own death after losing the Infinity Gauntlet for the first time).
