Please explain the game to me.

You're stranded on an alien planet, and you have build a factory to produce the components needed to conduct research, build a rocket to escape the planet, and defend yourself from the aliens that try to kill you. All kinds of fun logistical, engineering, and optimization challenges involved in doing that. The trailers on Steam provide a decent showcase of that (though not necessarily good factory design), plus there's a demo to at least get a feel for the basics.

ah the usual early access scam. where they increase the price on some random update after being there for 2 or 3 years and never do any sales.

Nah, this is a very good example of Early Access done right. There's been a steady stream of content updates, backed up by a weekly development blog that gives a delightful level of transparency and community engagement to the whole thing. They're increasing the price because they've hit a point where they aren't likely to be adding much more content before they decide that it's release-ready. The next major version update is primarily going to be GUI updates, some optimizations, and tutorials, and the only reason they aren't expecting to call that one 1.0 is that all of the back-end rewriting they're planning is likely to necessitate some unforeseen changes. The patch after that is expected to be just polishing those changes, and once it's stable, they'll be calling that the official release.

As for not doing sales, that's not just an Early Access thing. They've stated on a few occasions that they want people to buy the game because it's a good game, not because they're manipulated into it by pricing tricks. As such, no sales, and they've priced it at $20 instead of $19.99. Ordinarily, I wait for sales before buying games, especially on Steam, but that philosophy was one I really respected, and I haven't been remotely disappointed by my purchase.
