Conservatives in the US love big government, just in different ways than liberals, and talk out of their ass claiming otherwise.
Liberals want a "big government" that expands social services and safety net to more people / gives greater benefits at the expense of higher taxes.
Conservatives want a "big government" that invades the personal lives of every day people in matters like who they can marry, can they get an abortion, should life-saving medical breakthroughs with stem cells be halted b/c it makes Jesus cry, vastly expands/protects police and prosecutor immunity from "misconduct" (ie, outright breaking the law and violating the Constitutional rights of normal citizens), etc...

A sane person would note that the conservative version is far more intrusive into people's personal lives and thus a far more egregious example of "big government." Fortunately for the Republican party, any sensible conservatives fled or were chased out of the party years ago, so the logical fallacy and blatant hypocrisy of claiming to be pro-small government while trying to dictate what people do with their own bodies has never hindered their politicians' ability to get votes.
