Any time you talk about "deserving" a consequence, that's a matter of vengeance. If you want to justify a consequence, ground it in practicality, not vindictiveness. It's not out of vengeance though. I am talking about serial killers, mass shooters, child rapists, etc the worst of the worst kind of people. If you want to go on a killing spree like that, then the consequence is your death. We no longer need you in this society or want to try to change you. Those acts are irredeemable. You get some times to make peace with what you did and come to terms with your eventual demise. I feel giving them time to do just that is a mercy. Most executions are done pretty humanly nowadays.
