A lot of people would rather donate to charities directly instead of having the government as a middle man. Anything that goes through a middle man is more expensive, especially when the middle man is the government. The government has proven time and time again that they waste funds, can't budget correctly, and even takes tax payer money to pay off sexual assault victims.

Whether you agree with that view or not, its a legitimate stance to hold. The fact that most leftists nowadays equate anyone being against the welfare state as "hating poor people" or "not caring about poor people" is unfortunate. Most on the left dont seem to care about understanding different points of view, they only demonize people that disagree with them.
