When the outlay is noticeable, people bitch more about not getting value for their money. Anything that goes through a middle man is more expensive, especially when the middle man is the government. The government has proven time and time again that they waste funds, can't budget correctly, and even takes tax payer money to pay off sexual assault victims. Whether you agree with that view or not, its a legitimate stance to hold. The fact that most leftists nowadays equate anyone being against the welfare state as "hating poor people" or "not caring about poor people" is unfortunate.
