In RPGs, do you usually prefer turn-based combat or real-time combat?

I know there are styles beyond strict "turn-based" and "real-time," but generally speaking, which type of combat do you prefer? I, personally, lean strongly toward turn-based. It tends to offer more strategy and depth. Too often, in games like Tales of Symphonia, I felt as if I just spammed the generic attack button like crazy while throwing in a special attack every so often, not really doing much thinking. Such combat lacks the intensity of action-based games as well as the strategy of turn-based RPGs. The fact that some of my favorite RPGs include the Pokemon series, Super Mario RPG, and Skies of Arcadia also makes me lean toward turn-based.

What do you think?
