More people on average probably know calculus and how to solve a differential equation, but how many of them know how to cut a log and build furniture out of it? How many know how to deliver a baby? How many know how to knit a piece of clothing? How many know how to churn butter?

Where I am getting at is, people back in the day lived less surrounded by other people who were experts at one thing such that they had to know how to do all sorts of things.
Today, we don't need to know how to deliver a baby because we would just take the mother to the Hospital.
Back then? The delivery would be at the house and if you were lucky, the local doctor might stop by to help, but likely you were on your own with your family.

Today, if you spilled gravy and ruined your shirt, you just go to Walmart. Back then, you would need to make a new shirt.

Is this really a growth of intelligence? It seems rather a difference of focus. Yet people in our age boldly declare their superiority without question.
