That's been enough to get people fired almost anywhere. There's no real defense to it. The idea that the joke is horrible but the message is good isn't really a defense. And if you're basing your decision solely on whether you think it might have offended somebody else rather than does it conflict with your values, you have no integrity. And if you preemptively cut ties with somebody only to quickly learn you were misinformed on a key point, you've acted very stupidly and unprofessionally on top of it.
