I mean, it was overhyped, but also I don't think you can have the same movie without race as a reference. One thing that the racial connotations did, even if you miss overt references imo, is it helps remove the trope the Cabin in the Woods sends up, where you have an obligatory horror movie scene with protagonists doing something overtly stupid and you have to suspend your disbelief for the scare. In Get Out the dude never really does anything that is seemingly stupid, and his fear also doesn't feel forced. and both of those things are because of race relations. I don't see how you can stand in something else and get the same impact.
