What is "white nationalism" in this context, since the article explicitly separates it and white supremacism?

I think you could read the article as using those terms fairly interchangeably.

"White nationalist" is generally seen as a tamer, more palatable term than "white supremacist," because in theory I guess one's belief in the necessity of nations exclusively for white people is not indicative of one's beliefs on the superiority of white people. There are definitely people who bristle at the latter label while accepting the former, but to seem extent I think that's just PR.

IMO you nailed it for a big portion. In my experemice from both the "white nationalist" I know as well as the flat out racist I unfortunately know it comes down to two groups (with different subsets of course). The first as you described and the second that are all about this "western supremacy" mindset that talk about culture and defend it with other races/religions/cultures having their own places without complaint.

Some make some decent arguments if a little distorted but most seem to just parrot what they here or use it to justify being a dick (if I'm being honest).
