One stab to the neck just behind the clavicle in a downward angle is all it takes to puncture the lung and cause a pneumothorax. Given the stance someone will have with a bat, just go for the left side (assuming a righty). Realistically the range isn't enough of a difference that going "all-in" wouldn't let either party get one good "attack" in. Shattered radius/ulna versus pneumothorax.

Also this whole shtick about the bat having range....just wait for the bat to strike first (hah). The knife user will have to counter to have any chance. Lunging first is probably asking to just get knocked out. Probably more chance the knife misses, but if we're assuming two people of equal size/strength/skill, I mean...I agree with the other guy. Bat gets one chance to get the momentum, otherwise knife probably wins.

Then again, I'm not from the hood so the fuck do I know.
