Seeing as you can't pick up items and have them sent to your item storage, why would it make sense you can do that with Pokemon? Speaking of which, I really hate the menus in this game. I swear I spend like 15% of my time at the Poke Center computer. It's really annoying how you have to deposit Pokemon just to even look at the ones you have stored. Or if you boot a TM that you can't use yet, so you deposit it, that you have to completely withdraw it and use it again to remind yourself what it does.
