#30 Overall Picks

CB Antwan Allen (S2 by Chiefs)
CB Jonathan Wade (S3 by Lions)
DT Frank Okam (S4 by 49ers)
RG Garrett Collins (S5 by Buccaneers)
QB Josh Freeman (S6 by Rams)
QB Cam Newton (S7 by Redskins)
CB Cortez Allen (S8 by Wildcats)

A. Allen > Okam > Wade > Collins > Freeman > C. Allen > Newton

Antwan has been a long, steady defender for the Chiefs. He had a career low in tackles and INTs, but as far as I can remember, the Chiefs have never had a Bottom 10 defense with Allen on the team. He's a true shutdown corner with a penchant for coming up with a few picks every season (he did have a season with 7 though). He's 30 now, so his best football is probably behind him, but this was one of the more unheralded careers by a first rounder even if the wheels are starting to come off.

Because of the 49ers' 3-4 D, Okam had to wait several years behind Gerard Warren before becoming the nose tackle in S7. For a steadily improving defense, he has 67 tackles, 22 sacks, 3 FF, and 2 FR in the past two seasons. He is just now entering his age 27 season and I'm sure that Scare is hoping for a rise in rating to go along with his production.

Sitting behind both Nathan Vasher and Anthony Henry, Wade was one of the rare CBs who didn't seem to work out as a slot corner. He totally killed it as a starter though, and those were the Lions' best years on defense. His interceptions have gone down every season since his first as a starter, but during those early seasons, the Lions' D was routinely in the Top 10 in Passing D, and this was in a division where the Bears had Javon Walker, Jerry Porter and Eric Johnson, the Packers had Lee Evans and Carnell Williams (a prolific receiving HB), and the Vikings had Darrell Jackson, Todd Heap, and DeAngelo Williams.

Collins alternates between stifling and frustrating seasons. In the good seasons, he has 64 blocks against 8 sacks. In the not-so-good seasons, he has 62 blocks against 26 sacks. Last season was a not-so-good season, so that's good news for a Bucs team without two mid-90s OTs from last season!

Do you know how many young QBs throw up seasons where they have low 2000 passing yards, an even TD:INT ratio, and mid-50s completion %? It seems like we have several a season. He's at least young enough to still carve out some sort of career, though it doesn't appear to be a starting one in St. Louis.

If prof is reading this, I hope that he doesn't take it the wrong way, but I cringed when I saw that the Wildcats wanted to trade up back into the 1st round with me to select a CB. If I had known that, I wouldn't have done that out of a moral obligation. Sending CBs to a talent-barren defense is a sure way to get them killed. Like in real life, you should start building in the trenches and work your way back. Long story short, the Wildcats' D finished second-to-last in yards allowed, which of course significantly hurt Cortez's development.

Now Newton has been terrible for the Redskins. Unhealthy, turnover-prone, and just wholly ineffective. Matt Moore was taken in the 2nd round of that same draft, and he might and probably should win the starting job over Newton if Russell isn't in the picture.
