learn some coding languages

I already know some, although I am getting fed up with trying to find a job as they all ask for 5 years of experience where I live.

Show proof of understanding of the subject. Use your experience to create an example. Make something impressive, they won't care about 5 years or not.

I got 3 interviews so far and they seemed to care more about what I did outside of school.

School is a rigid, structured environment. It doesn't prove your ability to solve problems, think creatively, or adapt to changing technology. When I got my A+ certification, I found out almost immediately that it was already outdated. I couldn't get work. I started repairing RROD Xbox 360s in my home. I found multiple flaws in the architecture, and developed a method that corrected almost all of them. I mentioned that in an interview, and when asked to explain, the interviewer was extremely impressed. I got the job, that on paper, I was not qualified for, and moved into upper management within a year. When the company was bought out two years after I started, I received a six-figure severance package.

Use what you know, update your skillset, there are free options, literally millions of YouTube videos alone, not to mention other free sources, design and create something. Show it off in an interview. This works, but not every time.
