It's stronger than that because there are people who were sure they were in a life/death situation and still chose not to fire. It's like a primal biological switch that is even stronger than preserving the self, that is for preserving humanity. Free will simply breaks down at the level of human extinction. No indoctrination or even insanity can overcome it.
