Harvest wood, turn into planks, set four planks to make crafting table

Set crafting table

Turn more wood into more planks

Put two planks on top of each other to make sticks

You can make tools by forming their general shape (two stick bottom, three planks on top = pickaxe) (one stick two planks = sword) (two sticks, a plank on top, and two planks on the upper side = axe) (two ticks one plank = shovel)

Find a place and dig the dirt out then use a pickaxe to harvest the stone

The stone lets you build better tools than wood. You can also make a whole ring of stone to make a furnace which is very powerful. The furnace lets you cook meat which makes food you get from killing animals a lot more effective. It also lets you smelt ore into iron/gold/diamond/etc. I believe you can also use wood to burn other wood into charcoal which a much more efficient fuel source, and you will also find natural coal in caves and the upper stone layer of the world.

Night is when monsters come out, if you spawn near sheep kill them to get 3 wool. Lay 3 wool on top of 3 planks which lets you craft a bed so that you can skip the night and stop monsters from spawning.

You can build a ring of planks to make a chest to store your materials inside.

I forget how to craft torches, I want to say put a charcoal on top of a stick but I could be wrong. Anyway, they're useful to light up any kind of shelter you dig/construct. Monsters will also spawn in any area with a low enough darkness rating. This makes any caves you find potentially dangerous and makes lighting mines you dig necessary.

That's the basic necessities, use the wiki once you want to learn more

If I'm missing something obvious it's because this advice is from like 1.2.5 when the game development had some semblance of intelligence behind it
