Education is super important and a reason to brag about your state. Being from, and currently living in, Mississippi, I can guarantee that ignoring idiots and stereotypes is a constant.

When I have gone to other states and been asked where I'm from I've had people ask me if I had the Internet, or if we all eat roadkill, or if we had paved roads. My favorite is the person asking, "Where is your southern accent?" The eye roll I give them says it all. Stereotypes either do arise from jealously, hatred, or ignorance.

Granted I did have to go almost 300 miles away to get a good education in my field, but that's because as important as education is, my state doesn't value it as much as other states, or as much as religion.

You tell people you're agnostic and you might as well have kicked them in the balls and stolen their wallet. So yes, education is important because it opens minds and leads to progress, which we in Mississippi sorely lack.

Hell, I see memes all the time from people I went to high school with bragging about how they never have to use algebra in their daily lives, and they are proud of this fact. We have serious problems here and being educated would solve a great deal of them.
