Most of the confederate monuments were not installed as historical pieces in the immediate aftermath of the conflict; they were installed during periods of heightened racial tension as a not so subtle message to blacks that whites were still running the show and they should tow the line or get out. If there's a notable artistic or historical reason why a given particular statue should be saved, fine, make that argument. But giving them a blanket pass "because history" is ridiculous, especially considering a lot of them were mass-manufactured.

Again, this post demonstrates the sheer ignorance of the anti-confederate statue argument. Very rarely do statues and memorials go up immediately following an event -- and, considering that the South was devastated by the Civil War, it would have been hard to do so -- which is literally seen by the fact that many confederate statues are older than the Lincoln Memorial. Does that mean that the Lincoln Memorial only went up as a final "Fuck you" to the South?

Likewise, many statues, etc, of other historical figures from the 1800s have gone up since the year 2000. Does that mean that all of them are somehow illegitimate?
