Because I was raised Mormon (never really believed though) and I don't think it is really any wackier. They believe god lives on the magic planet Kolob, the Garden of Eden was in Missouri, there was a massive empire in the Americas (even though there is zero archaeological evidence), their holy text was translated using a rock in a hat, god used to hate black people (but changed his mind when it became politically necessary), and they routinely make excuses for the child sexual abuse perpetrated by the church's founders. I could go on. The first is Scientologists, the second is not really a real point (why NOT Missouri?), the third is all Christians (Noah's Ark etc), the fourth is no sillier than a talking snake or bush, the fifth isn't even true (blacks are still believed to be black due to the curse of Caine), and the sixth is Catholicism. I maintain that it's not any more or less idiotic than other mainstream religions.
