What? It absolutely is depressing. The slightly hopeful ending about "everyone trying to make their way in life" doesn't make up for that.

Eh I've seen legitimately depressing anime, and I wouldn't add NHK to the list. He may have had a shitty life, but the anime didn't particularly depress me.

I think why Welcome to the NHK really gets to some people is that they can relate to it very well since it doesn't really have any fantasy/sci-fi/fictional elements in it.
