This speaks to one of the reasons:

"Kyzer was found guilty again in 1981, but because the rules regarding death sentences were still unclear, prosecutors did not ask for the death penalty this time. Instead, they sought a sentence that insured that Kyzer would never go free. Kyzer was sentenced to two life terms plus 10,000 years."

Of course he was still eligible for parole after 10 years so I'm not really sure that served its purpose.

"Even though Kyzer had the extremely long sentence, he was eligible for a hearing before the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles after serving ten years of his sentence."
