Professors in the federal government? Maybe at the military academies and I really doubt they'd pay that low.

No- for the fellowship, not for the professorship. The federal government does not employ professors. Government funds specific labs & salaried tenure-track positions at Universities for professorships.

The original poster and I were talking about postings on USAJobs so I'm not sure if this is that relevant.

We will never know unless JoeX can confirm whether the posting was for a post doctoral fellowship.
