1% of an endangered species dies and nobody bats an eye

1 guy gets accidentally killed by said species and everyone loses their minds

To be fair, more than 99% of all species that have ever lived are now extinct. Going/being extinct is pretty much the destiny of every species.

The fact that humans give even the slightest of shits about endangered species at all is impressive, since it means we're willing to go out of our way to make an ultimately futile gesture to save something we have no real reason to care about in the first place and which is eventually going to die anyway.

With humans it's almost less impressive, because there's always that element of "That could be me and/or someone I know!" or at least some degree of empathy with something that is inherently like you. We're pretty much biologically primed across millions of years of evolution to actually feel bad about dead humans and to not give a shit about whales.
