Your personal wealth is like your report card. Nobody likes showing off their report card unless they know they're doing exceptionally well and then, if they know somebody is doing far worse than them, they might feel a little bashful when discussing their grades. And then, on a more pragmatic level, most people don't pay enough attention to their overall expenses, debts, obligations, etc, to really get a good idea of their personal wealth. They know their salary, they have a rough idea of household expenses, but they don't really plan their finances.

In general, though, it's awkward to ask and it's awkward to just volunteer it.

People are weird, and see money as a direct measure of one's worth.
And you don't just ask someone what their value as a person is. According to human society, if their value is lower than yours, you're insulting them. If it's higher than yours, they're insulting you.

I'll argue it's the opposite. Most people that I know (some are quite wealthy, one of my best friends owns and operates a country club with his brothers), don't want to be defined by the money they make. Most of the best people in this world are poor and most of the worst people flaunt their money.

You don't seem to understand how it works.

Because employers want to keep wages a secret so people don't know what to ask for.

Years of corporate shady bulls***. Don't want everyone to know what anyone else makes because they might find out they're being treated unfairly.

pretty much, realized it isn't really the people but the ones you're working for

It's strictly taboo to ask your co-workers what they make (and some companies have a rule against that), but those norms don't affect talking to others about wealth.
