"They" used as a gender neutral pronoun is often incorrect grammar

For example: "That person needs to shut their mouth"

is incorrect

It's almost acceptable when the subject is vague, and even more so when the number of subjects is unknown: "They built a sandcastle"
It's awkward and stupid when referring to a known, singular subject: "Chris put on their hat"

Rofl.. imagine that actually becoming a thing. Sounds ridiculous.

Person 1: "Tina is in the restroom putting on their makeup."

Person 2: "Oh, who else is over?"

Person 1: "Just Tina and I."

Person 2: "...."

did you really just make a grammatical error while criticizing the use of a perfectly legitimate singular pronoun that has been in use for hundreds of years?
