...and one of the core strengths of the franchise is that which particular group of outsiders are relating to it at any given time can change.

It basically started out as a metaphor for teenagers who feel like they don't belong, to becoming a civil rights/racial metaphor, to tacking on aspects of anti-semitism, to slowing picking up steam as a allegory for being gay. And eventually it'll probably provide a framework for whatever the next group of minorities feel oppressed by mainstream culture.
