Being a atheist just means you don't believe in the existence of any gods it doesn't necessarily mean you believe in no afterlife. Although I personally don't believe in a afterlife I actually want a afterlife to be real because at least then I can carry on "living". That would be nothing more than burring my head in the sand from reality though if I believed that.

I don't think you can consider yourself a true atheist and believe in an afterlife. They seem to be necessarily contradictory.

In order to believe in a form of afterlife you have to believe there is something separate from the body that makes us what we are - commonly attributed as a soul. Atheists however should not believe there is a soul that is 'released' upon death. It wouldn't make sense to believe otherwise. There would have to be some scientific logic behind it like copying your brain or some shit. But at that point, could you even consider it an 'afterlife'?

That's why I'm always a little amused when someone claims to be an atheist but also believe in ghosts. The logic of it just doesn't make sense.
