I have been guilty of that sort of thing myself, largely because experimenting with unfamiliar restaurants alone is kind of intimidating. There's often a massive selection, and it can be overwhelming to try and figure out which ones are worth spending on of those 24 precious meals at (and while it seems silly, I would kind of be more inclined to completely waste the meal by going to a fast food place than to risk trying to make good use of it and ending up with something mediocre). That, and if I'm traveling alone, that means I'm eating alone, and going into a sit-down restaurant to eat alone isn't completely comfortable. It's silly, and a waste of a great opportunity to try new foods, but I can sort of understand the lure of familiar things.

Now, I say this having never traveled alone anywhere particularly well-known for its local cuisine. In such a case, I would probably be interested enough in the local fare to take some chances and step outside of my comfort zone, and when I've visited such places with other people, we've done so. But I can understand where she's coming from.
