Maybe if Poe had been a bigger character and it felt there was more reason for it (other than him saying "yo I'm a great pilot" earlier) it might have been better, but his role in the film was akin to that of R2 D2 While it's been a while since I watched it, I'm pretty sure more people than just Poe said he was a good pilot. I think some people said he was the best and I'm pretty sure someone called him an ace pilot. The X-Wing he was using was also a prototype I think.
