Those stats probably include shitty mobile phone/facebook stuff like Bejeweled or Candy Crush. While they're technically "games" and those people who only play those are technically "gamers", it still doesn't fit quite right with people who actually game on notable game consoles like Switch or Playstation.


Oh are we gatekeeping now? Is that what we're doing?


It's not gatekeeping if you redefine the terms!


I mean, if you're using one term to conflate two populations that are actually distinct in easily-definable ways, that term loses quite a bit of usefulness. It is true that women are playing a lot more games than they used to, and the gaming market as a whole isn't the complete sausage fest it once was, but there are still very definitely trends in which games women play. If you're going to be talking about women as gamers, you need to take those trends into account, otherwise your conclusions are too broad to be meaningful or useful. So yes, redefining the terms is a defensible decision here.
