I agree that SyFy is a terrible title for the channel. Never understood why they did that.

I think they did it to follow some 4 letter channel call name format but not sure

No, I don't think it has anything to do with character limits or standard formats. MSNBC is still MSNBC, and both stations are owned by NBC Universal.

Additionally, the Nielson list shows that SyFy still uses a call name that resembles its old name more:
Client Call Ltr - - - Service Name - - - Distributor Short Name
SCFE - - - SYFY EAST - - - SYFY East
SCFW - - - SYFY WEST - - - SYFY West
SFHD - - - SYFY HD - - - SYFY HD

They still have a 'C' in the standard def station call name!

It was obviously just some new brand manager that thought they needed to revamp the channel's image; let people know they still have science fiction, but that's not all they do.

Also when I got mad Stargate SG-1 got cancelled and wrestling was on Friday night instead, they can say, "We aren't the Science Fiction channel, we can show other programming!"

I'm still bitter.
