I usually just estimate 15%. I've got a reasonable sense of multiples of 15 because sales tax here is 15%, but while it's easy enough to do 16*1.15 in my head, 18.40*1.15 is notably harder. Typically, what will happen is I'll round up to a whole bill, figure out what percentage that corresponds to by comparing it to 10/20%, and add/subtract from that if it's not a good approximation of 15%.

Granted, I rarely use cash these days, so usually the card machine will just do all the calculation for me.
