There are many cases of people opting into certain racial groups in order to get better treatment.
Multiracial people often "opt" into preferred ethnic groups with which they only have very tenuous connections in order to get Affirmative Action.
I know a Jewish kid whose family comes from Morocco who "opted" into the Hispanic category because his family originated in Spain and were expelled in the Reconquista. That was 1492.
Many multiracial applicants opt into the black or Native American categories because they might have 1/4 or less ancestry from that group.
They didn't opt into being qualified. They either are qualified and choose to say so or they are lying. ---
