I'm just going to leave this here. I choose no sides, but I am a firm believer (and it's proven science) that you can control your thoughts, conscious and subconscious. Your thoughts are turned into your feelings, and your feelings drive your actions. You know what your actions make up? Your character. So you can change yourself by changing the thoughts you think of.

Guess what, if you think bad/sad thoughts, it's going to affect your character! You will be a sad, miserable person, if that is all you think of. And this is what I am thinking of when people say to "push through" depression. You must consciously choose your thoughts, because that will cascade into who you become and what you do with your life.

And you know what else is scientifically proven? That the level of control you have varies based on genetics, parental conditioning, society, and peers. So 2 people, born in completely different cultures and around completely different people, can take things completely differently. The issue I have with your statement is not that you are wrong, it's that you are intentionally leaving out the fine details, the journey, so-to-speak.

I think you mean I left out the self pitying stuff that allows people to distance themselves away from the problem. Giving away that power leads further into depression.

I'd suggest depressed people here to read 7 Habits of Successful people by Covey and Flow by Csikszentmihalyi (pronounced cheek-sent-me-high). Might just open up your brain to accepting that you and only you can control your life.

Also, here is a Ted Talks with Csikszentmihalyi.
