Maybe not being an ignorant fucking asshole who makes people feel horrible about themselves just to win an argument about how I was "throwing my life away" by being clinically depressed.

Yeah, sure, people go through shit all the time, worse shit than I was going through. That doesn't mean that I "shouldn't have been depressed." You can't help "being depressed." It just happens in cases even where it has no place "being depressed." Why the fuck was Robin Williams depressed? He should have been happy and great! Fucking Robin Williams, what a lazy asshole, right? Just wanted to take the easy way out.

I was hardcore depressed from like 2005-2013. ( I mean I still am but that was incredibly bad). Meds didn't work and therapy was a joke. You just gotta fight it and find little ways to help you deal with it.

If you seriously think you have a mental disorder, go get yourself diagnosed by a medically qualified professional. That will show your father.

While its true, theres better ways to put it then just "get over it". Some people are different and handle it different but if someones reaching out for help its detrimental to them to just brush their issues aside.

You do have to fight it TC but remember its not weak to ask for help. Someones always there even if your father doesnt understand.

I battle depression and i've gone through this. but just remember "this too shall pass"

There are other jobs and school doesn't have to be that way. School is a tool to help you advance in life. You should be grateful you even have a job, and benefit of educating yourself.

Sounds like you need someone to drive you out the hood, fly you to Somalia, or work 100 hours China.

He could be frustrated over his life, and taking it out on you. I would just brush it off and not take the stuff he says seriously.

Some people can get over depression by doing what some would describe as "getting over it." Others cannot. While social factors seem to contribute to its development, the end result has nothing to do with the extent of hardship experienced by the person with depression. And knowledge of people with greater hardships or first-hand experience with those greater hardships do not necessarily make it easier for people to deal with depression.

Welcome to the brain and the opaque wall of difficulty that is mental health.

Yeah, well, I have other living options if he doesn't want to "take care of me" (even though I'm self sufficient in all ways but the roof over my head). My mom's always telling me to move back with her and finish my schooling now that she's back in the city.

also do as much as you can. pharma stuff, natural stuff, exercise, therapy, etc.

Thats why it's nice to have people who give you both.

I've seen people beat suicide simply by picking themselves up from their bootstraps, metaphorically, believing that depression is a choice and mainstream thinking is that it's not. Many say it's not a choice, but some who recover say it was. Every case is different.

It's unfortunate how our society has these things as a first resort for depressed young folk. In many cases, no real effort is put into changing the underlying circumstances of the person's life that are making them depressed, instead the person is just pushed onto pills to treat some imaginary chemical imbalance while their real issues go unaddressed.

Mind telling us what exactly is causing your depression? It would give us a little insight about you and your situation.

Im currently going through a break up after 2 years, and i feel its inevitable to be depressed during a break up. But what gets me through it, is knowing that fortunately this is only a first world problem. That theres children in Africa who are starving to death, Marines and Soldiers in Afghan being shot at this very moment, and children in Syria who just witnessed their parents being blown up in an airstrike. Extreme examples yes, but at the end of the day after thinking about the world, i come to appreciate every little detail in my life, good or bad. Because unfortunately someone, somewhere, at this very moment is begging they can live just long enough to see the sun rise just one more time.

Depression sucks, and theres no switch one can flip to instantly turn it off. Meds and drugs only mask the pain but in the long run, they'll only push you further down that dark road. My best advice would be, no matter how shitty your situation is, realize what you do have in life and what others don't. Try and give back to the world by being a good person. Knowing you did something positive that day and helped someone is the best way to feel good about yourself.

I don't even talk to my family about my depression because that is their mentality. Strangely enough, the "suck it up, pussy" mentality is why I went my whole life ignoring my mental health leading to a recent breakdown.
