Because it maximizes revenue. "Lost potential revenue" and "lost money" aren't the same thing. If a plane takes off with empty seats the airline has missed out on potential revenue. If you don't show up to a flight and they overbooked the flight so someone else ends up in your seat then they are maximizing their revenue.
