Well they did refund the airport tax which is about 10% of the ticket price. So how are airlines losing money if passengers don't show up?

Because if you can sell 110 tickets for a 100 person plane, and don't have to refund the 10 people who don't show up, that's 10% more profit per flight.

Because it maximizes revenue. "Lost potential revenue" and "lost money" aren't the same thing. If a plane takes off with empty seats the airline has missed out on potential revenue. If you don't show up to a flight and they overbooked the flight so someone else ends up in your seat then they are maximizing their revenue.
