I know they mentioned they were killing off Greenlight a month or two ago, and were gonna replace it with Steam Direct or something. I had actual realistic plans to start developing a game soon, to try and get it up onto Steam, but I don't know whether to bother or not now since people were quoting figures that submitting a game to Steam Direct would cost anywhere from $100 to $5000.

Like, I have no problem paying money to submit a game, that's how the world works. But I don't really want to pony up $2000 with no guarantee I'll ever actually see it get onto the store. Alternately, I would be fine with throwing a few hundred bucks at them with no guarantee either since it's not that much money.

Has there been any updates about all this?

“We will ask new developers to complete a set of digital paperwork, personal or company verification, and tax documents similar to the process of applying for a bank account. Once set up, developers will pay a recoupable application fee for each new title they wish to distribute, which is intended to decrease the noise in the submission pipeline.”

Seems like you'd get that money back if it doesn't work out or does work out?
