I know they mentioned they were killing off Greenlight a month or two ago, and were gonna replace it with Steam Direct or something. I had actual realistic plans to start developing a game soon, to try and get it up onto Steam, but I don't know whether to bother or not now since people were quoting figures that submitting a game to Steam Direct would cost anywhere from $100 to $5000.

Like, I have no problem paying money to submit a game, that's how the world works. But I don't really want to pony up $2000 with no guarantee I'll ever actually see it get onto the store. Alternately, I would be fine with throwing a few hundred bucks at them with no guarantee either since it's not that much money.

Has there been any updates about all this?

“We will ask new developers to complete a set of digital paperwork, personal or company verification, and tax documents similar to the process of applying for a bank account. Once set up, developers will pay a recoupable application fee for each new title they wish to distribute, which is intended to decrease the noise in the submission pipeline.”

Seems like you'd get that money back if it doesn't work out or does work out?

It means you get your money back if you actually release the game. Tons of greenlight shit never gets released and wastes everyone's time.

Hm, that's a pretty big gamble, if the fee is high.

But fortunately, I looked into that TotalBiscuit video, and he was saying that it doesn't seem like Valve would go much higher than the $100 price point for devs to submit content, and he highly doubts it would go higher than $1000. They're also introducing some explorer program where participating people can flag games that are good, to help them gain some traction.

That's good news then, either way. Thanks for the help, dudes. I appreciate it!

It's a game I made a long time ago in RPG Maker just for fun, but I decided I want to rebuild it from the ground up with my own assets and develop it like a real game with a real team.

I know RPGs are a dime a dozen these days, and the more common a type of game is the less likely it is to get attention, but I'm just proud of the story and I really would like to just get it out to the public in some form or another.
