First of all: I played the Vita version of Totori, and I don't really know how much they changed.
Haven't gotten far in Ayesha yet, so I won't comment on that.

In Totori, it's all about time and resource management. Basically, you run a workshop and have to rank up your adventurer's license by exploring, battling, and crafting items within the time limit of 3 years. You'll also build relationships with other characters by following their quest lines or bringing them into battle, and events will trigger when certain conditions are fulfilled.

If you fulfill the adventurer rank condition, you'll be able to move the main plot forward and an ending will trigger at the end of year 6 depending on the main plot's progression and character events you have seen.

Totori is a pretty good entry point for the Arland trilogy, since vanilla Rorona (first installment) is pretty unforgiving (so I've heard) and Meruru (third installment) has a good chunk of its focus on the returning characters.
