I still think many important documents are guarded jealousy without rhyme and reason, and should be widely be made available and open, but some colleges and universities have very draconian policies when it comes to their documents. Paywalls have very little to do with universities, but with journals. The journal system is pretty awful. Universities and individuals pay for subscriptions, researchers pay journals to include their work for publication, and journals utilize researchers as a free resource for peer review. But it's not like people can protest and be like 'I'm no longer gonna publish in these journals' because you'd be sacrificing your career. More or less, the system is relatively fucked, and fixing it, if it'll happen at all, will only take place over a long period of time with large cultural shifts in the scientific community. --- =E[(x-E[x])(y-E[y])] ...
