I don't think the AI is making a big distinction between players when it picks swings. Regardless, Miguel is a rare entity that has both contact AND power, so it literally doesn't matter "how it uses him".
I would believe you except this game is completely awful A.I. wise. Pitchers only giving up one run, getting pulled 50 pitches in after 6 innings. Refusing to use certain players in certain situations. I wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the AI sucked enough to make a hitter like Miggy look bad.
If you think he's useless then why did you even offer a trade at all? I don't get you.
I offered the trade because all my moves involved getting slumping players who needed a change of scenery. Dustin Pedroia, Vladimir Guerrero. It was a risk-reward thing: if Miguel busted out of his slump, I got a formidable bat. If not, I was going down in the first round. No point in playing it safe at this point. Playing it safe just means I'm a first round exit anyway, why not make that last push and try to do something significant?
And yes, I would rather have Miggy than Dunn.
