good father right there. yes, he could've taken the laptop away but that doesn't drive the point home. 'i took your stuff lol' just gets them mad and nothing more. 'i put 8 bullets in it and broadcast it online' on the other hand does. it gets your attention much harder and any initial anger is washed by shock and disbelief.
also he seems to be a pretty damn good father as the two are on moderately good terms AFTER this. he's raised her well and isn't looking to make a buck off of this, profit off it, or anything. has gone on record to say so. she isn't depressed in a corner trying to kill herself. she's baffled how her options in life shrunk down to becoming a stripper all of a sudden due to having a dead laptop. he's sticking to a hard line and lesson and i respect that 100%, and she's well adjusted. can't ask for anything better than that from a parent.
if it were my kid, i doubt i'd go that far. not because that's right though - exact opposite. in terms of being a father he is flat out better than me and has bigger balls than i do to pull this off. so i'm pretty glad he did it as it does work well as a lesson to people who wouldn't do this out of fear or thinking they're going too far.
